So Hip it Hurts - Music and Hotels

I was just surfing away at mimegasite.com and Suzie Amer has recently posted a blog about music in hotels, particularly how lobby’s, hallways and pool areas are now infused with music.

Yes, your beloved property is becoming more like a disco than a place to do business.

It makes me laugh remembering a program at the Trafalgar Hilton in London a few years back. This is a fantastic hotel and they have a cool lobby bar. BUT; they also had a DJ that pumped the music so loud that attendees could not even hear the front desk staff speaking to them and it was impossible to have a conversation.

It was a comical scene watching us lean over the front desk counter to hear what room numbers we all had. I remember asking for directions and actually giving up, thinking, it’s London, I will just wander around until I find what I am looking for (and I did).

Now, I like good tunes, and hip sells, but at what point does your own coolness and quest to be ultra-hip actually hurt rather than help.

Just a thought
